M&S And Applegreen Expanding Partnership In Ireland

M&S Food is significantly extending its supply deal with Irish forecourt operator Applegreen.

Since an initial agreement was struck last year, M&S Food ‘shop-in-shops’ have been rolled out to five Applegreen sites across Ireland, offering fruit, sandwiches and salads, dinner for tonight and a selection of other M&S lines, alongside Applegreen’s own product range.

The two companies have now signed a new 10-year agreement that will add up to 60 more M&S Food units to Applegreen’s forecourt stores.

Applegreen plans to open 15 of the M&S Food sites by the end of 2024 in counties such as Louth, Meath, and Limerick, with other locations to be announced throughout the year.

The two businesses have also been piloting a new click & collect service at four of the forecourt operator’s stores, which allows shoppers who buy clothing from M&S and have it delivered free of charge to Applegreen locations.

Fiona Matthews, Managing Director for Applegreen Ireland, said: “This is great news for Irish consumers, as Applegreen will now bring M&S Food products to a much wider market. M&S Food complements the existing Applegreen offer, as we are always evolving to meet our customers’ high expectations.

“We have been delighted by the positive customer reaction to our partnership with M&S Food, which offers our customers greater choice and a wider product range. Based on the success of the partnership to date, and our ambition for further growth, we plan to roll out more than one M&S Food at Applegreen concept each month next year.”

Inside Lidl’s strategy for in-store bakery (and how suppliers can help)

Lidl is making a major play for in-store bakery and it’s not afraid to shout about it. The discounter – which is currently the sixth largest grocer in the UK by market share [Statista] – recently overtook Tesco to secure the biggest slice of in-store bakery (ISB). Data from Kantar showed that Lidl, which was crowned  Bakery Retailer of the Year  at the 2023 Baking Industry Awards, had pipped the UK’s largest supermarket  with 18.2% of the ISB market compared to Tesco’s 18%.
