Morrisons Tops Price Ranking

 Namnews, 17th April 2023

Efforts by Morrisons to improve its price competitiveness appear to be paying off, with it delivering the cheapest basket of everyday grocery items amongst the traditional supermarkets for the first time since May last year.

The weekly price comparison of 33 products by trade magazine The Grocer found that Morrisons came out the cheapest with a total cost of £65.58 thanks to a large number of promotions. The chain offered the lowest price for 15 products and was exclusively cheapest for nine. It had deals on 16 items, with nine of these straight discounts.

Morrisons returned to underlying sales growth in its last quarter after benefitting from moves to improve its price competitiveness following a dismal 2022 when it struggled to compete amid soaring cost inflation.

The Grocer survey ranked Asda in second place, with its basket of goods costing £68.38. Sainsbury’s was third on £68.79, followed by Tesco (£71.65) and Waitrose (£80.48).

The survey, conducted in association with Assosia, does not include Aldi and Lidl.
