Lidl Aiming To Overtake Morrisons

Namnews, 18th November 2022 Having recently already lost the fourth spot in the UK’s largest grocery retailer rankings to Aldi, Morrisons could soon be leapfrogged by Lidl. After posting  solid year-end results yesterday  and revealing that cash-strapped shoppers were flocking to its stores, Lidl GB’s Chief Executive stated that the discounter had the “momentum” to overtake the struggling Big Four supermarket. Asked if he expects to surpass Morrisons in the near future, Ryan McDonnell told the Daily Mail: “I think so, yeah.” He added: “We have a very healthy pipeline for our expansion. I am not calculating at what point I am going to overtake, but certainly we have a lot of potential to keep taking market share and enjoy more switching gains.” Updating on its current trading yesterday, Lidl cited industry data from Kantar showing shoppers last month switched £58m of spending from Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Morrisons to the discounter. This followed Lidl attracting over 770,0...

Compass Bounces Back But Warns On Margins

Namnews,  21st November 2022 Compass delivered a big rise in profits during the past year as its recovery from the effects of the pandemic surpassed expectations. However, the catering giant is forecasting a 2023 margin below analysts’ estimates as inflation takes its toll. “We can restore the pre-pandemic margin, but the pace of that will really depend on the level of new business wins… and also when we see inflation start to come off a little,” said Chief Executive Dominic Blakemore in an interview with Reuters after the release of annual results. Like many firms, Compass has been grappling with higher costs of food and labour. It has been tackling soaring inflation by changing ingredients, such as switching from sunflower oil to rapeseed oil in the UK and reducing the number of menu options. The economic environment also means more companies are outsourcing their canteen needs, helping Compass gain new business and retain clients at a record rate. Compass, which serves off...

Frozen Food Sector ‘Part Of The Solution’ To Cope With Inflation Pressures

Namnews,  23rd November 2022 The frozen food industry is “perfectly placed” to help consumers and foodservice operators offset some of the effects of the cost of living crisis, according to Ian Stone, President and Chairman of the British Frozen Food Federation (BFFF). Speaking at the Federation’s Annual Luncheon in London yesterday, Stone highlighted that prolonged shelf-life, reduced wastage and competitive pricing mean frozen food can help families and foodservice operators cope with the pressures of double-digit food inflation. “I believe that we, the frozen food industry, are perfectly placed to be part of the solution, not the problem. But only if we act as one and be stronger together,” said Stone. “Surely, we can garner the newfound enthusiasm for frozen food gained during the pandemic. An enthusiasm that saw retail sales increasing by £1bn and sales of freezers rise by nearly 50%.” He added: “For the consumer, we must constantly strive to offer the highest quality, b...
