Co-op Warns Of Delistings As Part Of Range Review

The Co-op has warned suppliers that it will be delisting some products as part of moves to “simplify” its range amid the cost-of-living crisis.

In a recent letter sent to suppliers seen by trade magazine The Grocer, the society highlights how shopping habits and choices changed throughout the pandemic and are continuing to do so.

The letter adds: “One of our key aims is to deliver a simplified, focused range across all of our stores, and as part of this we’re looking at reducing our product range to meet these requirements.”

The Co-op states that it wants to “drive more accurate replenishment and reduce waste while continuing to deliver key needs in a convenient way to our customers, something which we are already working on with the support of many of our suppliers.

“In order to meet our targets, we are reviewing where efficiencies can be made across many of our categories, ultimately meaning that some products will be delisted as we focus on the key needs of our customers.”

The retailer stressed that any delist processes would be done with reasonable notice.

A spokesperson for Co-op told The Grocer: “As a convenience retailer, we have less shelf space than larger supermarkets so continue to adapt to changing consumer behaviour and consistently review our product offering. But we continue to develop and launch new and exciting products, to ensure our range meets the needs and demands of our customers.”

News of the potential delistings comes just days after the Co-op revealed that it was axing 400 jobs at its head office in Manchester as part of a restructuring and cost-cutting drive to adapt the business to the tough trading environment.

Inside Lidl’s strategy for in-store bakery (and how suppliers can help)

Lidl is making a major play for in-store bakery and it’s not afraid to shout about it. The discounter – which is currently the sixth largest grocer in the UK by market share [Statista] – recently overtook Tesco to secure the biggest slice of in-store bakery (ISB). Data from Kantar showed that Lidl, which was crowned  Bakery Retailer of the Year  at the 2023 Baking Industry Awards, had pipped the UK’s largest supermarket  with 18.2% of the ISB market compared to Tesco’s 18%.
